I hadn’t been able to concentrate all morning. First, Scarlett had stripped down to her underwear in plain view and sang to herself loudly as she washed in the stream. Had I tried not to stare at her curves? Sure. But it’d been so long since I’d seen a woman that I couldn’t help myself. I sat on my ledge in the ravine with one eye on the bridge and the other on the tempting curving figure as she shimmied her pants over her hips.

Her long dark hair was piled on top of head, and her face was now free of makeup. Little freckles dotted her nose. One thing about my change into a troll—I now had excellent hearing and sight.

After that, she began rearranging my outdoor furniture. Next, she disappeared into my cabin, where I could hear her rooting around as she continued to sing to herself. I thought maybe she’d take a nap. Pout about being bored. Eat. But she was a busy little thing.

Her mother had been my only real friend in town. I’d moved to Stream in the Woods after my sisters had died. I’d been lost, depressed, and anti-social. But Violet was a gregarious woman who broke through my shell bit by bit with her big smile, maternal comfort, and warm cookies. She’d talked about Scarlett all the time—she’d been so proud of her daughter who’d moved to the big city to pursue her dreams.

Just then, Scarlett emerged from my cabin. She gave me a big wave and a grin before waltzing downstream. The sun shone on her hair and brightened her eyes. My stomach clenched. I’d let Violet down once, and I’d never been able to apologize for it before everything went to hell. No way would I let anything hurt her daughter. And that included keeping her from me. My sexual desires hadn’t died when my body had changed, but I had to keep my distance from Scarlett. She was too tempting, and I wasn’t quite sure how strong I was.

“Help me out, Violet,” I muttered to myself. “Make me strong. At bare minimum, Scarlett deserves a human companion.”

At midday, I headed down to the ravine to make us some lunch. When I tried to enter my cabin, Scarlett blocked the way, her hip cocked and a teasing smile on her lips. “It’s not done yet. You can’t go inside.” Her cheeks were flushed, and her eyes sparkled in the sun. She’d left her coat behind, and despite the still-cool temperatures, her hair at her temples was damp with sweat. What had she been busy doing?

I turned on my heel without a word and headed toward my cold storage. Lunch ended up being moon pies over the fire with an old moon pie maker that Violet had given me long ago. Scarlett stared at it for a long time, and I wondered if she recognized it. We filled the maker with bread, ham and cheese, then held the cast iron square over the fire.
